I often get asked about how to gain influence without some sort of formal authority. Turns out it's easy. Just be happy and helpful!
But seriously, we all have jobs to do, but it's the spaces in between our job descriptions that make us stand out. Especially in a large organization it is our ability to influence those in other offices or departments or even those with more senior authority than us that will really make us stand out from our peers.
